Highclere Castle {aka Downton Abbey}

A quick day trip from London Town, Newbury is home to the infamous Highclere Castle.

It is believed that the land has been home to people for some 1300 years, with Highclere Castle transforming in it’s place during the 18th and 19th century. The Castle is currently home to Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, who spend their time between Highclere and a nearby home. The castle continues to operate as a residence allowing visitors to explore the grounds only 60 to 70 days a year, and of course, for filming! Speaking of operating, did you know Highclere Castle functioned as a hospital during the first World War? If you’re a Downton fan, I bet you did! Sorry, spoiler.

The Castle is incredible and surrounded by the most beautiful, serene greens of trees and gardens. A ticket includes a wander through the woods, the gardens and of course, the stunning house. No photography allowed inside, sadly.

In the stable house, afternoon tea is available with delicious English tea, champagne, and a tasteful collection of sandwiches, scones, and sponge cakes.

But on a day like the one we went {a perfect, sunny British day}, pack a picnic and a bottle of vino and throw a blanket across the gorgeous green lawn and soak up that vitamin D.
